RR Blog

I wanted to make sure people understand the all the work that goes into building a business.  It’s just not about the glamor of ownership, the dreams of financial success, or being the BOSS.  There is real sacrifice and discipline.  There is a lot of work and toughness needed with planning, making mistakes, negotiating, making more mistakes, pissing people off, being told “It won’t work”, losing money, and letting the world share in your vision.

So I’ll be sharing with you, the world, some of the behind the scenes development, mistakes, and accomplishments of Royal Razor.

Right now, I’m working on the look and content of the website.  There is still some color matching, logo size and placement issues, SEO configuration, and migration of content from the Royal Razor Facebook Fan Page to the website.

I’m no web genius but being a boot-strapping entrepreneur with a limited budget, I’m managing to make things work.

If you have any comments or questions about the website, please let me know.

Me and The Four Seasons…what a perfect match!

Last night, I went to a networking event with Baltimore Means Business at The Four Seasons.  It was a fantastic event where I met a ton of local Baltimore entrepreneurs and business professionals.  The atmosphere, the FOOD, the people, and the experience was great.  I would recommend that any local entrepreneurs in Baltimore join.

A key part of being a successful barbershop in Baltimore, is the use of grassroots marketing.  Handflyers, posters, and street signs.

Royal Razor has ordered its first set of marketing materials and business cards left the printers and are on the way. Another small step in getting Royal Razor visible.

Royal-Razor-Baltimore-Barbershop-Barber-Shop-Multicultural-Black-Latino-BestAfter some careful consideration and really trying to figure out who the barbershop’s target demographic is, I have had the logo redesigned.  I think it fits who we are and who we want to attract here in Baltimore.

The logo is meant to have an interchangeable color schemes depending on the background and marketing campaign.  Not sure if magenta is going to remain the “standard’ logo color but it’s what we’re working with now.

I think it’s a great job by my graphic designer!

Please tell me how you feel about our new logo.

First day of construction of Royal Razor.  It has been over 15 months since its inception.  Some days I thought I would never find a location but now I’m so happy I choose this space.

With any business, the more money you have…the better your chances for success.  And Royal Razor Barbershop wants to take advantage of all the opportunities to ensure its success.

I’ve applied to the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) to secure a micro loan.  As most who know Baltimore, Baltimore is a city in an economic slump.  The ENTIRE city of Baltimore is classified as economic development zone…yeah, we’re grimy like that here in the B’mo!

After weeks and weeks of working on my loan package, the DHCD has granted Royal Razor a Microenterprise loan commitment…they’re giving me access to money at an incredible interest rate.  Pending some final documentation, closing for the loan will happen shortly.

Royal Razor greatly appreciates the DHCD’s vote of confidence in our ability to improve the business community of downtown Baltimore.

Another step closer!

Before Royal Razor Barbershop takes its place in downtown Baltimore, I want everyone to see what the space looks like prior to construction.  This space hasn’t be used in over 11 years and now it will have a purpose again.

While waiting for Royal Razor Barbershop to open in downtown Baltimore, I am starting to build its social media presence on Facebook and Twitter.

I think building a strong brand identity via the Royal Razor site, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media portals will give us an advantage amongst the already established barbershops in the area.

Please “Like”, “Follow” and stalk us accordingly!!!

Multicultural barbershop startup, Royal Razor, has been searching for a downtown location for a long time.  And after a year of failed negotiations and bad real estate agents, Royal Razor has finally signed a lease with Avalon Bay at 304 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.

The downtown Baltimore space has been vacant for 11 years.  The soon to be barbershop will be housed in a 1,800 sqaure foot location with 12 foot ceilings…it is a massive space.

I would like to thank my lawyer, the real estate agent and Avalon Centerpoint for getting me into the space.

In tough financial times and being a downtown Baltimore barbershop startup, Royal Razor has been searching for additional funding of my first hair cutting location. After months of endless submission of documents, PNC and Royal Razor Barbershop are doing business.

Financing a start up is difficult.  It’s so crazy…if I wanted to buy a $60,000 car I can get financed in an hour.  But when I wanted to borrow $25,000 for a business I had to be put through an obstacle course of paperwork and scrutiny like no other.

However, all of that is water under the bridge.  I’ve got the money and they’ve earned my trust and loyalty.

Royal Razor is working on becoming a real business in downtown Baltimore.  I am currently working out the lease and in talks with the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development for additional financing.

Royal Razor will offer grooming services for men such as fades, scissor cuts, and hot towel shaves.  The barbershop will specialize in cutting all hair types from black, Hispanic and other straight haired men.

Royal Razor, a multicultural barbershop opening in downtown Baltimore, has won a $10,000 entrepreneurial grant from the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore.

Here is the description of the program, OPERATION: STOREFRONT-

Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, Inc. (DPOB) seeks proposals from individual artists and artist teams, established or aspiring retailers and restaurateurs, and creative entrepreneurs, nonprofits or companies to occupy, activate, and utilize empty first floor space for creative enterprises. DPOB also welcomes proposals from landlords with available storefronts who are interested in putting their site back into active usage.

Operation: Storefront is designed to match individuals or groups seeking space with available first floor spaces in Downtown, thereby putting Downtown storefronts back into “operation”. Successful applicants will receive grants of up to $10,000 to support costs associated with the occupation of, and operation at, a selected vacant first floor space.
