As some of the last touches are happening for the barber shop, Royal Razor has finalized the window signage for the shop front.  And as modest as I am…not really, I must say this is the coolest barbershop window graphic I have ever seen.  As of right now, my design is pending review with the landlord and property manager.

I would like to personally thank my designer, Tommy, for really giving Royal Razor such a strong graphic, branding image.  Without him, it wouldn’t look sooooo cool.

The photo above is what the shop front will look like.

Sup, Baltimore?  It’s been a while since my last post.  Here’s a quick update about Royal Razor barbershop.

Despite falling a few days behind the scheduled soft opening, Royal Razor has been making loads of progress with getting ready for opening next week.

Lately, it has been a whirlwind of marketing meetings, graphic design work finalization, ordering and installing fixtures, interviewing barbers and a million other tasks I handle every day.  Being an entrepreneur isn’t for the weak of heart.  I’m in the shop at the crack of dawn and here until almost midnight, if I don’t sleep here.  I’ve even sacrificed my once six-pack body and haven’t worked out in five weeks.

As you can see from the photos below, furniture has started to arrive and the waiting area floor plan is being worked out.  I’ve had my electronics crew install TV’s, free Wi-Fi, security cameras, and alarm system last week.  This is a barbershop so different from anything here in Baltimore and I can really feel the space starting to come alive.

There are still some issues that have to be addressed in the space but I’m cranking them out.  Additionally, I’m happy to report that as of today, I’ve brought on three multicultural barbers that I’m sure are going to be great fits for the shop.

Take a look at the progress of the shop.  Also, if you haven’t already found Royal Razor on Facebook, go to our page and “Like” us for additional updates and news.

Baltimore Barbershop Barber Shop Multicultural Black Latino Best Royal Razor

Guys I’ve been super busy with building Baltimore’s next great barbershop, Royal Razor!

The space was officially turned over to me on 26JUN and I’ve basically been living in the shop.  I’ve been building stations, helping old delivery men bring in heavy barber chairs, holding meetings, working with city inspectors, ordering additional items, holding more meetings, and doing countless other tasks.  I almost want to buy a sofa bed for my office but I’d probably sleep there every night instead of going home.

The space is starting to come alive with every equipment/furniture delivery.  It’s very interesting to see my idea turn into reality.

Take a look at the progression of Royal Razor so far.

Baltimore Barbershop Barber Shop Multicultural Black Latino Best Royal RazorThis week, Royal Razor Barbershop placed its 1st print ad.

If effort to establish a presence before the soft launch in July, Royal Razor Barbershop has used local newspaper, Baltimore City Paper, to kick off its print ad campaign.

I want people to KNOW Royal Razor exists and one of the better ways to grab the attention of my demographic is to advertise in City Paper.  Baltimore City Paper is read by everyone…black, latino, white, young, old, gay, straight, and any combination in between.

Like other major cities that have alternative newspapers, Baltimore City Paper writes unique stories, tells readers about all the social happenings of area, and showcases restaurants and other local brands.

I’ve decided to make this one of the legs of the Royal Razor marketing plan.

Like all marketing efforts, consistency is the key to making this multicultural barbershop brand known.

Royal Razor Baltimore Barbershop Barber Shop Multicultural Black Latino BestAs part of the Royal Razor marketing plan, I feel video content will be an essential element to the coolness of the brand.  I want people to constantly look at the barbershop events and inner workings via video and wonder what they are missing out on when they are not there.

I just finished a meeting with two executives from a local video production company in Baltimore.  They seem to be really cool and full of ideas.  We had a great brain storming session where we threw around some thoughts about the goals and what the focus of the first two videos should be and how it can be achieved. It was a very productive meeting.

But as with all things for a small start up, it comes down to price.  There is always a battle between wanting to grow and project a cool, slick image with the realistic constraints of financial limitations.  So now I’m waiting to hear back from them with a proposal of work.

End scene.

Baltimore-Best-Barbershop-Barber-Shop-Black-Latino-Multicultural-Royal-RazorThis morning in Baltimore, Royal Razor Barbershop wakes up to its first press release.

This press release talks about the success I’ve had in raising capital for the business, the inspiration for solving a problem and starting the business, and a bit of a background about myself.

It’s a quick read and hopefully it will draw some additional positive attention to the barber shop.

Just a couple of hours ago, the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development handed the barbershop a five figure check for Royal Razor’s development!

This is just another small personal and business success of Royal Razor.  In a time where people and companies trying to start and expand their business cannot find money, this small Baltimore start up has secured yet another major financial backer.  Downtown Partnership of Baltimore and PNC Bank are the two other organizations that have made funds available to Royal Razor.

It feels great that another outside entity took an objective look at my business plan, my personal character and find real validity and promise in my ideas enough to hand over a boat load of cash.

Baltimore, I love going to the space because I can SEE Royal Razor Barbershop coming to life.

Just had an onsite construction meeting with the architect.  We went over the delays with floor sanding, Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) meter installation, and fire system inspection.

The space is 70% complete and looks completely different now than just two short months ago.  Royal Razor’s move in date is 4 June and now I’m ordering barber chairs, grooming stations, and other furniture to arrive the first full week of June.

Please keep coming back to this site to get the latest information on the barbershop or go to its official Facebook fan page.

Baltimore, after five days of countless hours tweaking layout, colors, content, social media integration and other stuff, the Royal Razor Barbershop website is officially open.  I don’t want to say “complete” because a website should never be complete.  There is always adding of content and maintenance of behind the scene mechanics.

I would really appreciate any and all constructive criticism of my work.

Royal Razor Barbershop would like to thank The 401 blog for featuring us on its Baltimore blog.

The 401 blog is a blog detailing the growing business and community development of the City Center area of downtown Baltimore.

According to 2010 Census data, Baltimore’s Downtown area (Tract 401) is now its fastest-growing neighborhood. With a 130% increase to over 4,000 residents in the past decade, Downtown is rapidly accommodating its booming population with world-class restaurants, fantastic housing, parks and plazas and exciting nightlife.

And since Royal Razor is an Operation: Storefront WINNER and apart of the 401, I guess they felt it was appropriate to blog about this barbershop.  Thank you again!

Last night, I spoke with the architect and property manager about the completion of the construction. And of course, there are delays.

Some structural integrity issues with the shop facade need to be fixed and waiting for the power company to install a meter has pushed the timeline to the right.

I don’t mind delays…I even expect them.  I’ve been on too many home construction sites and engineering settings to know very rarely does any project finish on time.  Besides it gives me a bit more time to work out some internal kinks.

SEMPER GUMBY!
