Royal Razor Barbershop is continually improving its appearance.  This week I wanted to add some depth to the space, so I created a striped detail on a bump out section on a wall.

I used some Frog Tape and some white paint to create a rather cool look.  I then added some Ikea Ribba picture frames…haven’t placed anything in them yet.

Please let us know what you think about the shop’s latest improvement.

Downtown Baltimore is really trying to up its image with vast city planning ideas and initiatives for economic growth.  The organization that is in charge of such progress is the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore (DPOB) and last night they presented me with an award for my efforts positively impacting the community and economic growth of downtown through the creation of Royal Razor.

Last night the DPOB had its annual meeting/party, honoring business and community leaders of downtown.  Kirby Fowler, the president of DPOB, did a great job of organizing the event, the Mayor of Baltimore, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, spoke and of course, yours truly brought class to the joint.

I would really like to thank Mackenzie Paull and the Downtown Partnership for their help over the last year, recognition of my hard work, and for showcasing Royal Razor in the 2012 Annual Report.

Royal Razor Barbershop and local Baltimore street wear brand, Agio Life, are teaming up to throw an event at Royal Razor on 7 November 2012.

Agio Life makes some really cool items for those with great taste and style.  Their items will be on sale at the event.

So come out cut listen to some great music and meet some cool people.  Look for future details about the event.

It’s always a great feeling to see a customer coming in looking shabby and leaving fresh, clean and put together.  It’s amazing at what a Royal Razor haircut can do for you.

Best Photography Series – Glenford Nunez’s TYP Photography Studio’s The Coiffure Project

Published: September 19, 2012

TYP Photography Studio, 11 N. Eutaw St., (410) 660-5134

Local fashion photographer Glenford Nunez has shot some slick fashion spots for the likes of Relapse magazine and The Washington Post, but images that we just can’t turn away from fill up his Coiffure Project series. The idea is brilliantly simple: attention-grabbing photographs of black women with their natural hair. Nunez appears to be a detail-oriented photographer, as both his black-and-white and color images bear the mark of an eye attuned to how light is going to play off eyes, skin, and hair, and the results are striking photos of black women that are simultaneously fashion magazine-glamorous and 1968 raised-fist politically potent.

In effort to do more things Baltimore, I went to the Farmer’s Market two blocks down from the barbershop.

Every Tuesday there are vendors selling produce, treats, and food at the park near the University of Maryland Medical School, Baltimore.  I stood in line for about 25 minutes for an AWESOME turkey burger by Mr. Gary Thornhill’s stand…I forgot the official name of the company.

This turkey burger was massive with cheese and barbeque sauce…the pic doesn’t do it justice. The flavors were really nice.  I’m most certainly going back next week.  The only complaint is that onions are mixed in the ground turkey…I HATE onions.  I just picked them out.

In this week’s FLASHBACK, we feature LL Cool J’s I’m Bad.  This is a hip hop classic.

I’m Bad” (sometimes spelled I’m BAD) is the first single from LL Cool J‘s second album, Bigger and Deffer. It was released in 1987 for Def Jam Recordings.   I’m Bad made it to several Billboard Charts, including #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, #4 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, #2 on the Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales, #3 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play and #1 on the UK Singles Chart.[1][2] This single was followed by “I Need Love” and “Go Cut Creator Go“.

The song samples the Theme from “S.W.A.T.” by Rhythm Heritage, Federal Signal Corporation‘s famous Q2B siren, and an interpolation of the theme song from the 1960s syndicated animated series Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse. It is the first mainstream rap song where the phrase ‘motherfucker’ was used (usually edited from radio airplay).

Barbers, Jarrett and Joe, give a set of cousins a fresh new look.  These two clients were searching for a new shop to handle their Jersey Shore looks and my guys hooked them up.

I’m sorry I didn’t get the “after” shots but I had to pass out flyers. 🙁

As previously mentioned in another blog post, we will be writing about all things about style and pop culture to add “meat” to our barbershop/”style” website.

I thought it would be a fun idea to pay respect to some uniquely cool things from the past in a series called “FLASHBACK”.  Here’s our fist submission from QUEEN.

Another One Bites the Dust” is a song by the English rock band Queen. Written by bass guitarist John Deacon, the song featured on the group’s eighth studio album The Game (1980). The song was a worldwide hit, charting number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, number two on the R&B charts and the Disco Top 100, and number seven in the UK Singles Chart.[2][3] The song is credited as Queen’s best selling single, with sales of over 7 million copies.

What made this song so uniquely different from their other songs is that the big success of this song came when American, “black” radio stations started playing it on air.  It became a cross over smash.

Here’s a little known fact.  After attending a Queen concert in Los Angeles, Michael Jackson suggested to Freddie Mercury backstage that “Another One Bites the Dust” be released as a single…YUP.  King of Pop strikes again!

Happy Monday Baltimore!!!!!

As another week at our barbershop kicks off, Joe gives this gentleman a much needed haircut.  This guy just cut off his braids and wants a Mohawk.

Joe hooks him up with a righteous cut and sends him out the door smiling.

An element of the Royal Razor Barbershop website is style commentary because hair and fashion go hand in hand.  From time to time Royal Razor will be featuring clothes, music, and all things style related.

Our first style post is featuring Reebok’s “Time To Show Zip Boot”

Part of their Classics collection, nothing says look this way quite like this hightop. The classic mid-cut construction and rubber outsole are taken to a whole new level with fun additions like the side zipper and eye-catching gold lace eyelet and fabric details.

I absolutely think these are so sweet!
